Donation Ceremony for Environmental Education Solar Power System in Hong Kong

Based on AEON foundational ideals of "Pursuing peace, respecting humans, and contributing to local communities," AEON Environmental Foundation (AEF) was established in 1990 as Japan's first independent corporate foundation focusing on the global environment which is committed to carry out environmental protection activities around the world. In order to promote the application of renewable energy and environmental protection education, AEF and AEON Stores (Hong Kong) Co., Limited donated solar power systems to 4 primary schools in Hong Kong this year, including Aberdeen St. Peter's Catholic Primary School, Kowloon Bay St. John The Baptist Catholic Primary School, Tai Kok Tsui Catholic Primary School (Hoi Fan Road), and Alliance Primary School, Whampoa which have installed solar photovoltaic system with a total system capacity of approximately 40 kilowatts.

To mark the occasion, AEON held the "Donation Ceremony for Environmental Education Solar Power System in Hong Kong" on March 23, 2024 (Saturday), and invited Mr. LEUNG Suet Fai, Chief Engineer/Energy Efficiency of Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, Mr. OKADA Kenichi, Ambassador & Consul-General, Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong, Ms. VU Im Fan, Assistant to the Episcopal Delegate for Education (Primary Section), Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong, and Mr. LEE Joseph Hon Wah, Deputy Head, Education Department, Kowloon Tong Church of the Chinese Christian and Missionary Alliance as guests of honour. On behalf of AEON stores, Mr. NAGASHIMA Takenori, Managing Director, AEON Stores (Hong Kong) Co., Limited, awarded certificates to representatives from four schools. This donation signifies the official handover of the photovoltaic system to enhance environmental education, integrate it into students' learning and daily lives, and foster environmental awareness among students.

Ms. YAMAMOTO Yuriko, Executive Director, AEON Environmental Foundation, noted in her speech, “Since 2009, AEF has been donating solar photovoltaic systems to 56 schools in Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam, and China, emphasizing the importance of cross-border environmental efforts. By providing these systems to Hong Kong, AEF aims to strengthen friendly exchanges between China and Japan and collaborate with Hong Kong citizens to enhance environmental protection and education.”

Hong Kong has actively embraced renewable energy initiatives. Mr. LEUNG Suet Fai, Chief Engineer/Energy Efficiency of Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, highlighted the city's commitment since 2021 to combating climate change by four strategies through the "Hong Kong's Climate Action Plan 2050" and the deployment of solar power systems in schools and welfare facilities under the "Solar Harvest" program since 2019, “These efforts align with the AEF’s project, demonstrating renewable energy development and achieving carbon neutrality before 2050.”

Ms. VU Im Fan, Assistant to the Episcopal Delegate for Education (Primary Section), Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong and Mr. LEE Joseph Hon Wah, Deputy Head, Education Department, Kowloon Tong Church of the Chinese Christian and Missionary Alliance, expressed gratitude on behalf of the participating schools, acknowledging AEF's role in advancing environmental education and sustainable social progress through the donation.

Apart from enhancing environmental education for primary school students in Hong Kong, this event received strong support from Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong to foster exchanges between China and Japan. Mr. OKADA Kenichi, Ambassador & Consul-General, Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong, emphasized the significance of the partnership between Hong Kong and Japan in various areas such as culture and economy, “This collaboration would strengthen environmental protection and education efforts, leading to global impact through the collective action of individuals around the world.”

After the ceremony, the guests visited the recipient schools to inspect the solar photovoltaic system. The enthusiastic students showed great interest for the new system. Moreover, the system is linked to a display screen, enabling teachers and students to monitor its power generation status in real time.
